Janis M. (Moyer) Powell Kinney

Janis M. "Jan" Kinney, 89, Altoona, passed away Friday afternoon at UPMC Altoona surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Cresson, daughter of the late Cecil and Ruth (Moyer) Powell. On May 3, 1957, she married James L. Kinney at Holy Name Catholic Church, Ebensburg.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 68 years; her loving daughter, Janis Abram of Altoona; five grandchildren: Cory Abram, Cole Abram (Amy), Heather Sprouse (Mark), Connor Abram (Melissa) and Jenna Koelle (Brett); nine great-grandsons and one on the way; and a loving brother, Bill Powell (Beverly) of East Berlin.

Jan was a graduate of Cambria High School and Clarion University. She received her master's degree from Penn State University. She retired as a high school librarian from the Hollidaysburg Area School District with 35 years of service along with being a professional storyteller for many years. She was a member of the National Storytelling Association, a storyteller for Southern Allegheny Museum of Art and did numerous workshops all across the United States. She was a rostered artist in storytelling on the PA Council of the Arts and was a published author. She was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg.

Jan enjoyed playing the flute, reading, wood burning, drawing and going for bike rides. She especially loved spending time with her family.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2025, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2025, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 301 Spruce St., Hollidaysburg, Father Alan Thomas, celebrant. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.
