Darrell G. Claar

Darrell G. Claar, 83, Bellwood, died Sunday afternoon at Celebration Villa of Altoona after an extended illness. He was born in Hollidaysburg, a son of the late John E. and Vallarree M. (Helsel) Claar.

Darrell is survived by his two sons, Adam D. (Kristine) and David W. (Lana); five grandchildren: Hannah, Meghan, Nathaniel, Ross and Jamie; and a brother, Galen (Sharon) Claar.

He was preceded in death by four brothers: Julius, Melville, Francis and Ronald.

Darrell was a 1960 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School. In 1963, he graduated from Thaddeus Stevens Trade School and later earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Lock Haven University in 1968.

In 1968, he began his middle school teaching career at Bucktail Area School District and retired from Bellwood-Antis School District in June 2002 after serving for 33 years. During his career at Bellwood-Antis, he held the position of head wrestling coach, and in 2017, was inducted into the District 6 Wrestling Hall of Fame.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping and especially loved his hunting trips at Whitetail Ranch in Wolf Creek, Mont.

Darrell's greatest joy was spending time with his sons and grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home Inc., Bellwood.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 23, 2025, at the funeral home, with Pastor Randy Zitterbart officiating. Interment will be at Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood.
