Carole Ann (Sunderland) Smith, 82, died peacefully in Hollidaysburg on Saturday, May 24, 2025. Born March 1943 in Altoona, she lived in Foxboro, Mass., and Irwin, Pa., before coming home to Blair County.
Survivors include her devoted husband of 62 years, William Smith Jr. of Hollidaysburg; daughter, Stephanie Hammel, and her husband, Gary, of eastern Pa.; and son, Bill, and his wife, Jody, of North Carolina. Carole was preceded in death by her parents, James (William) Sunderland and Marjorie Sunderland.
Carole was a 1961 graduate of Altoona High School and graduated from West Penn Hospital School of Nursing as an RN. She worked in that role at several locations before starting a family. Carole was passionate about genealogy and animals and was a member of the Blair County Genealogical Society and a supporter of the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society.
There will be no service or memorial.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent in Carole's name to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society and to remember that there are always animals in need of a loving home.
