Barbara Ann “Babs” Herman, 88, of Philipsburg, passed away Wednesday at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College. She was born in Denver, Colo., the daughter of Harold and Lois (Snelling) Briggs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fredrick H. Herman, on July 25, 2013; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Diane Herman; a nephew, Jeff Herman; and two sisters, Edna Mae Giberson and Jane Hunter.

She is survived by four children: former State Representative Lynn Briggs Herman (Julianne) of State College, Amy Briggs Beltz (Jeff) of Palmerton, Marti Briggs Eggers (Kevin) of Miamisburg, Ohio, and Guy Briggs Herman (Cathryn) of Bradenton, Fla.; eight grandchildren: Josiah Jones, Ketura Jones Rapchak, Austin Eggers, Evan Eggers, Jack Eggers, Vanessa Eggers, Colton Herman and Clayman Kidd; four great-grandchildren: Silas Jones, Amelia Rapchak and Evelyn and Cohen Eggers; and nephews and nieces in Colorado: Steve Rice (Carolyn), Robert Rice (Paula) and Lois Rice Davis (Doug).

Babs grew up in Colorado Springs and graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1955. She met her husband, Fred, while he was stationed in the U.S. Army at Fort Carson, Colo. Babs and Fred were married at First Presbyterian Church in Philipsburg on Oct. 15, 1955.

Babs was a devoted Christian and active in the First Presbyterian Church, having served the Lord in the choir and as a Sunday school teacher, and for many years in leadership positions as a Deacon, Trustee and Elder.

She was also active for several years with Pennhurst Players, a local theatre group, where she acted and assisted directing plays.

Babs was a member of Philipsburg’s Contemporary Club and N.O.P. and served the Centre County Republican Party as Vice-Chairman of Philipsburg’s Second Ward.

For decades, Babs was very active in the Philipsburg Christian Women’s group, a Stonecroft Ministries organization, and often hosted a women’s Bible study group in her home.

Babs enjoyed people and volunteer work in her beloved town. She was devoted to her family, friends and Christian faith and will truly be missed, but fondly remembered by all who came to know and love her.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Philipsburg First Presbyterian Church, 509 E. Presqueisle St., followed by a reception in Westminster Hall later this summer. Interment will be at the Philipsburg Cemetery.
