Walter R. ‘Alt’ Barnes Jr.

Walter R. "Alt" Barnes Jr., 73, Hollidaysburg, died unexpectedly Saturday. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Walter R. Barnes Sr. and Doris Jean (Piper) Peterson.

Surviving is a sister, Tracy Wyatt (Don); two nieces, Erin Barnes and Rachel Wyatt; a nephew, Ryan Peterson; and several close friends.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Tina McCoy; a brother, Dale Barnes; and a nephew, Lucas McCoy.

Alt was a Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School graduate and later became manager of the football and basketball teams.

He was proud to be an Air Force veteran, serving from 1969-73 during the Vietnam era. He recalled many fond memories of life "in the service" and was a "Rock Club" member.

He retired as a truck driver from BCO.

Alt enjoyed watching Felix & the Hurricanes perform and spending time with family, especially his nieces and nephews. He had a love for cars, attended many car shows and was a NASCAR fan.

Despite being an amputee, he lived his life well, with compassion and a positive attitude.

All services will be private at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place at Carson Valley Cemetery.
