Susan J. "Sue" Nycum, 79, died early Wednesday at Graystone Manor at Bellmeade. She was born in Altoona, a daughter of the late Howard and Loretta (Shultzaberger) Hazen.
She married Ray A. Nycum Jr., who preceded her in death Aug. 28, 2021.
Surviving are her son, Jeffrey A. Nycum, and his wife, Susan, of Bellwood; and two grandchildren, Andrew R. Nycum and Allison Z. Nycum, both of Bellwood.
Sue was preceded in death by a brother, H. Allan Hazen.
Mrs. Nycum was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Juniata.
She was a 1963 graduate of Altoona High School, and later graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Sue retired as a teacher from the Claysburg-Kimmel School District in 2005 following 35 years' service. She was also, along with Ray, the co-owner of the former SunnyCrest Ice Cream stand for many years.
Sue's greatest love was spending time with her family, grandchildren and friends.
She was a member of the Red Hat Society and the Womens' Club of Altoona.
Sue enjoyed traveling, especially with Ray, to Penn State bowl games, Shrine Hospitals for Children and to Virginia Beach to the annual Mid-Atlantic Shrine Convention. She also enjoyed attending the monthly retired teacher's luncheons.
She was a member and Past Queen of Dorcas Temple #129, Daughters of the Nile; a member of Jobel Court #11, Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America; and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Sue was active in helping with many events at Jaffa Shrine Center, including assisting alongside the Potentate's Aides, serving with the Mounted Patrol Ladies, assisting with the Kiddies Christmas Party and the former Jaffa Hillbillies Club. She was an avid sports fan, and she also liked animals of all kinds, including her dogs, cats and horses.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2025, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona; and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2025, at the funeral home, where a funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Eli Hess officiating. Interment will be made at Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood.
