Mearle C. Shaffer Jr., 90, of Roaring Spring, passed away Sunday. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Mearle Sr. and Helen (Shoenfelt) Shaffer.
He married Veryle Wilt, who preceded him in death in 2024 after sharing 58 years of marriage.
Surviving are two nieces, Roxanne Vaughn (Clark) and Lisa Krusey (Todd); a nephew, Glendon Vaughn (Sherry); two sisters-in-law, Wyona J. Wilt and Lora L. Keith; many other nephews and a niece.
He was preceded in death by siblings: Lois "Cookie" Shaffer, Lynne Black and Mary Lytle.
Mearle graduated from Altoona High School and retired from the U.S. Navy after more than 30 years' service as a Chief Petty Officer and a teacher of mechanical engineering.
He was a former member of the Scotch Valley Grange and the Shanty Shakers Campers Club.
Mearle was a life member of Duncansville Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed wood-working, carving and building things. He was a tinkerer.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Sorge Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Hollidaysburg, where a funeral service with military honors will immediately follow at 4 p.m., Pastor Tiffany Marvich officiating.
Private interment will be at Carson Valley Cemetery.
