Janine Johnson, cherished resident of York and Gettysburg, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 21, 2025, surrounded by her adoring family.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of Leroy Matthew Riley and Patricia Ruth Hurm. Janine's life was a testament to love, resilience and an unwavering dedication to others.
A proud graduate of Hollidaysburg Area High School Class of 1972, Janine pursued her passion for helping others by earning an associate's degree in occupational therapy from Mount Aloysius College. Her thirst for knowledge and commitment to her field later led her to achieve a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy. Over the years, she made an incredible impact working in various nursing homes, public schools and as a contractor. Her friendly demeanor, tireless work ethic and compassionate spirit touched countless lives.
A devout member of the Assemblies of God church, Janine fostered profound, lasting friendships within her faith community. She exemplified the values of service and generosity, embracing every opportunity to make a difference. Whether volunteering to teach English as a second language, serving as a part-time house parent at the Milton Hershey School, driving cancer patients to appointments or delivering Christmas trees and food to those in need, her selflessness knew no bounds. She embodied the true meaning of giving, bringing light and hope to everyone she encountered.
Above all, Janine found her greatest joy in her family. She cherished her role as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a heartfelt moment. Her passion for life and boundless energy created a ripple effect of joy and love that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to know her.
Janine is survived by her beloved husband and soulmate, Christian Johnson; her son, Matthew Johnson; her daughter, Elizabeth (Johnson) Flohr; her daughter-in-law, Janelle (Allen) Johnson; her son-in-law, Darin Flohr; grandchildren: Riley Noel, Julia Johnson, Ryann Flohr and Evan Johnson; and her siblings: Kay (Riley) Laratonda, Christine Riley, Paul Riley, Joy (Riley) DeStefano and Michele (Riley) Claycomb; as well as their spouses, numerous nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones, who will forever hold her in their hearts.
She is reunited in heaven with her parents, Leroy and Patricia (Hurm) Riley; her sister, Judy (Riley) Kim; and brothers, Dan and Tim Riley, whose memories she held dear throughout her life.
Janine's battle with breast cancer was met with courage and grace and her faith never wavered. To honor her memory and continue her legacy of kindness, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to METAvivor for stage 4 cancer research. After cremation, the family will have a private celebration of her extraordinary life at Historic Ashland.
Janine Johnson lived a life of love, service and devotion. She will be remembered as a beacon of love, strength and compassion. Her legacy of generosity, faith and unyielding love will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
