John Herbert Lewis, 89, of Tyrone, passed peacefully at home on Sunday after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born at home in Tyrone to late parents, John Heckman and Vera Mae (Westley) Lewis.
On Sept. 3, 1956, he was married in the home of the Rev. Paul Cox in Spring Mount, Pa., to Sylvia Jean Meek. They were blessed to share 68 happy years together.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by children, Noreen Mansfield of Jacksonville, Fla., and Terry Paul Lewis of Norfolk, Va.; nephew, Douglas (Peggy) Isenberg of Franklintown; a very special nephew, Jeffery (Marie) Isenberg of Danville; beloved cousins, Evagene Shultz and Cathy Stonebraker, both of Tyrone; and his cat, Benny.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jared Lee Mansfield; a sister, Joan Isenberg; and an infant brother, Richard.
John was a 1953 graduate of Tyrone High School. He retired in 1977 from WestVaco after 44 years of service.
John was of the Methodist faith and a life member of the Tyrone Sportsman Association.
He enjoyed fishing, day trips with Sylvia, eating out, watching the History Channel, Penn State football and the Steelers. John was a huge history buff, especially World War II. He also enjoyed spending time in his workshop making gifts of wood he proudly shared with others. He especially enjoyed spending time with his many nieces, nephews and cousins. Most of all, he enjoyed Westley Family get-togethers.
John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. His positive attitude, love of nature and life made him so special to all who were blessed to know him.
Family and friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025, at Feller Memorial Home, Tyrone. A service will follow with Pastor Cory Dobrowolsky officiating.
