Shannon

Edith “Edie” Joan “Bunker” Shannon, 84, of Altoona, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, at UPMC Altoona following extended illness.

She was born in Altoona to the late Willard and Clara (Shope) Berry and attended Altoona Area High School. Shortly after graduating in 1958, Edie and her former husband, the late Charles “Bob” Shannon, had four children together. She later spent many years with former partner, the late Daniel “Fisher” Smith, who was an integral and treasured part of the family. Edie spent most of her working years at Mercy/Bon Secours Hospital and retired in the early 2000s.

She always cherished time with family and enjoyed traveling. Edie even came to love the sun and sand enough to live on Florida’s Gulf Coast for about 15 years before eventually returning to Pennsylvania. Her hobbies included arts, crafts and Word Finds. She spent the last few years soaking up the beautiful landscape around her: admiring the flowers she planted, watching butterflies visit and taking in the Appalachian Mountain views she was fond of all her life.

Edie is survived by her sister, Dorothy “Dot” Holland of Altoona; daughter, Jody (Danny) Ayars of Crossville, Tennessee; daughter, Debbie (Randy) Lonsinger of Altoona; son, Rick (Mary Rose) Shannon of Mansfield, Ohio; daughter, Bonnie (Ed) Gunter of Altoona; grandson, Ken (Amy) Williams of Kingsport, Tennessee; granddaughter, Amber (Jeff) Slep of Altoona; granddaughter, Stephanie (Paul) Farber of Altoona; grandson, Ricky (Shannon) Shannon of Altoona; granddaughter, Ashley (Josh) Albright of Altoona; granddaughter, Krystal (Mark) Ursua of Findlay, Ohio; granddaughter, Tiffany (Alex) Zimmerman of Altoona; grandson, Joe (Ashley Perrin) Gunter of Punta Gorda, Florida; granddaughter, Mariah Kreider of Lancaster; grandson, Logan Shannon of Altoona; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Clara Berry; and brothers: Clifford “Cliff” Berry, Willard “Bud” Berry and Robert “Bob” Berry.

Family and friends will be received from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., 719 N. Fourth Ave., Altoona, where a funeral service will immediately follow at 6 p.m. Interment will be made at Alto-Reste Park.
