Marilyn Jean (Jimick) (Dougherty) Leavitt, 76, of Louisiana, passed away April 20, 2024, after an extended illness. She was born in Johnstown to Freda and Michael Jimick.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Douglas Leavitt, Master Sergeant (retired); daughter, Jodi (Chris) (Dougherty) Williamson of North Charleston, S.C.; son, William Dougherty of Altoona; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Susan, of Phoenixville; and two brothers, David (Geraldine) of Chalfont and William (Sheree) of Chadds Ford. She was unexpectedly preceded in death by her son, Brian Dougherty, who passed away on April 9, 2024. Also deceased is her brother, Eric.
After graduating from Altoona High School in 1965, Marilyn went on to attend Mount Aloysius, where she received her degree in nursing. She then received her B.S.N. from Fayetteville State University. After graduation, Marilyn worked at the Altoona Hospital, mainly in the palliative care unit. She married Douglas Leavitt in 1994 and moved to Shreveport, La. While there, she worked in various kidney dialysis facilities.
She was involved with Chapter 615, Air Force Sergeant Association, Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. She was a member from 1998 to present. She served as the chapter’s last President of the Auxiliary, from 2000-01.
Marilyn was a member of Chapter 30, Disabled American Veterans, Auxiliary, Shreveport – Bossier City, La., from 2001 to present and served in several offices, including Commander, for three years.
She met weekly, mostly on Wednesday, for lunch with a local group of ladies. Her 75th birthday was a surprise party with these ladies at The Reserve, a quaint restaurant in Vivian, La.
She enjoyed visiting various local tea houses and Cajun-style restaurants in Louisiana.
The family will hold a private celebration of life at a future date.
