Dr. Joseph A. Basile
July 18, 1940 – March 18, 2024

Dr. Joseph A. Basile, 83, Altoona, passed away peacefully Monday morning surrounded by his beloved family.
He was born in Johnstown, son of the late Anthony J. and Edith (DiGiacobbe) Basile.
On May 10, 1997, he married Carole L. Dean at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
In addition to his wife, Carole, he is survived by a brother, Barry A. Basile of Las Vegas; a sister, Maria Basile of Pittsburgh; sister-in-law, Pamela K. Shanafelt of Tyrone; stepdaughter, Wendy K. Gallaher (Chad) of Camp Hill; stepgrandchildren, Alexander Gallaher and Morgan L. Shermyer (Brian) of Williamsport; and many nieces and nephews.
Joseph was a graduate of Altoona Catholic High School. He pursued further education in Italy and proudly obtained his medical degree from Universita Degli Studi Di Roma La Sapienza Di Farmacia E Medicini in 1970. Subsequently, he completed his residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Long Island, N.Y. and went on to serve his community as an orthopedic surgeon at both his private practice and various local hospitals until his retirement in 2007.
A proud member of the American Medical Association, Dr. Basile’s interests spanned from culinary arts, with a penchant for Italian cuisine, to a love for golfing and exploring literature while traveling to Italy and Florida.
Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2024, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., 719 N. Fourth Ave., Altoona.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 806 11th St., Altoona, PA 16602.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Organ Fund, 806 11th St., Altoona, PA 16602.
