Dolly L. Hollen, 101, of Bellwood, began her new journey late Monday evening, Jan. 29, 2024, after a brief illness. On the first day of Spring, 1922, in Tyrone Forge, she was born prematurely to the late Lewis and Eva (Moore) Hample. Legend has it she was born weighing only one and a half pounds, being only a little more than a handful. She was nurtured in a peach basket located behind the warmth of the family cook stove, where she thrived.
On Feb. 4, 1950, she married Guy D. Hollen, sharing 59 years of marriage before his death in 2009.
Dolly is survived by her four children: Nancy K. (Bruce) Dart of Mansfield, Kenneth B. (Billie) of Altoona, Donald L. (Wendy) and Richard L. (Shu-Mei), both of Bellwood; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and former daughter-in-law, Hsui-ping.
She was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Warren "Cuss" and Joan Hample.
Dolly and Guy both graduated from Bellwood-Antis High School, Class of 1940. She then went on to receive her degree from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia.
In 1945, she answered the call to arms, serving as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, assigned to the 219th General Hospital at Hickam Field, Oahu, Hawaii. She also served on a hospital train out of Camp Patrick Henry in Virginia.
Dolly continued as a registered nurse, working at both Altoona and Tyrone hospitals, and as the school nurse at Bellwood-Antis School District.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Bellwood, where she sang in the choir.
An outgoing spirit, Dolly loved adventures, camping and traveling. She enjoyed attending social events and making new friends. She loved dancing and sang to the end of her days.
She had a strong, compassionate conviction with a gracious and keen wit and never spoke ill of others. She loved her family beyond words.
Dolly was a survivor, a hero and a warrior who will be missed by all who knew her.
Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024, at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home Inc., Bellwood. A memorial service with military honors will be held at noon Saturday at the funeral home, with Pastor Randy Zitterbart officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park, Antis Township.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in Dolly's memory be made to Bellwood-Antis Public Library.
