Margaret L. ‘Ticky’ Hendricks

June 19, 1936 – Jan. 24, 2024

Hendricks

Margaret L. “Ticky” Hendricks passed away Wednesday. Ticky was a nickname given to her as a child by her sister, Mary Ann, from a beloved bedtime story. Ticky was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Dr. Charles and Marguerite Hendricks.

Ticky lived from childhood through her adult life at 404 E. Wopsononock Road in Altoona, where she would proudly and brilliantly decorate her house for the Christmas holidays.

Ticky attended Chatham College for two years and graduated from Allegheny College in 1958 with a BA in theatre arts. Post graduation, Ticky obtained permanent certification from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction.

Ticky had an extremely active life and many careers, including schoolteacher, real estate agent, and a variety of sales and public relations positions. One of her favorite roles was working on and off as Sales Representative/Media Consultant with her mentor, Rod Wolf at WRTA, where she was the top selling representative in the Altoona-Blair County market. All told, Ticky spent 20 years in the radio industry working in all phases of the business. At one point, she was one of only two women Program Directors in the country. Later in life, she returned to her background in education as a member of the Altoona Area School Board, where she served for five terms ending in 2011.

Ticky’s greatest pleasure in life came from her many dogs. She especially loved Bichons, Westies and Goldens and is survived by Connor, McGregor and Amber. Ticky turned her love of dogs into one of her many careers as the long-time owner/operator of Pet Nannies. Many Altoona area families can be counted among her clients.

Ticky was very active in the arts in a variety of positions, including as a vice president and board member of Altoona Community Theater (ACT), vice president and member of the executive board of the Blair County Arts Foundation and chairman of the Mishler Committee during the 75th Anniversary Jubilee. Ticky directed many shows at the Mishler for ACT, including “Kismet,” “Barefoot in the Park,” “Anything Goes,” “Plaza Suite,” “Mousetrap” and “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”

She was predeceased by her older sister, Mary Ann Bloom, whom she loved dearly, idolized and often copied; and her brother-in-law, Lawrence Bloom.

Ticky is survived by her nephew, Mark Bloom, married to Jill Barlow Bloom; and her niece, Julie Bloom Citron, married to David Citron; as well as four grandnieces and nephews: Kyle Bloom, Lindsey Bloom, Samantha Citron and Charlie Citron.

There will be a visitation from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, followed by a 1 p.m. funeral service in the Stevens Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Janie McElwee-Smith. Interment will be held at Alto-Reste Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Altoona Community Theater, 1213 12th St., Altoona, PA 16601; or Mending Hearts Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 97, Hollidaysburg, PA 16648.
