Robert "Yankee Drifter" H. Nearhoof Jr., 90, Altoona, passed away suddenly on Monday, Dec. 18, 2023, at UPMC Altoona. He was born on May 4, 1933, in Hollidaysburg, son of the late Robert H. Sr. and Carrie A. (Dively) Nearhoof. On Aug. 2, 1997, he was united in marriage to Rebecca (Wertz) Nearhoof at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Along with his wife, he is survived by children: David Nearhoof, married to Penny, of Duncansville, Ernestine "Tina" Douglas of Duncansville and Debra Bender, married to Tim, of Altoona; grandchildren: Nathan, Joshua and Brittney; two great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Litzenger of Hollidaysburg; mother-in-law, Louella Gray; sisters-in-law, Susan and Donna; brothers-in-law: Walter, David and Mike; and other in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers: Miles Mock, Lester Nearhoof and Raymond Nearhoof.
Robert served in the United States Army from 1953-55. While stationed in England guarding the base, he had the opportunity to sing in a choir for Queen Elizabeth's coronation. He also sang for the Altoona Horseshoe Choir. He was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge No. 74, Bavarian Aid Society and the V.F.W. Post 8685 Fort Apache. He retired from Ollinger Bros after working there for almost 60 years.
Friends and family will be received on Friday, Dec. 22, 2023, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Good Funeral Home Inc. The funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 23, 2023, at 10 a.m., with Pastor Eli Hess officiating.
Burial will be held privately at Alto Reste Park.
