Dec. 27, 1949 – Dec. 17, 2023

Eger

Robert S. Eger, 73, of Hollidaysburg, passed away Sunday, Dec. 17, 2023, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. He was born on Dec. 27, 1949, in Altoona, a son of the late Robert W. and Mary Lucille (Weller) Eger. He was united in marriage to the former Betsy (Smith).

Robert and Betsy met on a blind date on Aug. 28, 1970, and it was love at first sight. Two years later, they got married at Bethany Lutheran Church on Aug. 12, 1972, and recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary.

Along with his wife, he is survived by son, Scott Robert Eger, married to Rebecca, of Corpus Christi, Texas; grandchildren: Aydan Patrick Eger, McKayla Joann Eger, Shayne Thaddeus Eger and Kalyb Dixon Eger; sisters: Carol Buckreis, married to Dave; Mary Ann Muri, married to Joseph; and Nancy St. John, married to Steven; nieces and nephews: Michele, Deborah, Nicole, Joseph, Kristie, Laurie and Steven; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves behind his precious dog Ellie, whom he loved and adored.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Peyton Lucille Eger.

Robert was a graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle High School, where he played basketball and was a member of the championship team in 1967 that was inducted into the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame. He always remained close to his 1968 graduating class, frequently attending monthly dinners and helping to orchestrate class reunions.

After high school, he went on to graduate from Altoona School of Commerce with an associate's degree in accounting. He worked in sales management for WTAJ and the Altoona Mirror, and as a boss, he always had an open door policy.

One weekend in 1982, the basketball coach for Our Lady of Lourdes had to step out for a weekend and Robert and Tony Lapore decided to step up and help out. That simple decision led Robert to eventually coach basketball for Bishop Guilfoyle, finding and being a chairperson for The Great Chevy Shootout and traveling out of town and state for various basketball tournaments.

He loved his Catholic faith and became a Eucharistic minister. While in Corpus Christi, Texas, he and Betsy gave communion in the hospitals and to the homebound. No matter what language was spoken to those Robert was serving, there was always a smile of gratefulness and gratitude.

No matter where he moved, lived or worked, he was always known for his smile.

At Bob’s request, there will be no viewing.

A funeral mass will be held on his birthday, Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023, at 10 a.m. at The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona, with Monsignor Stanley Carson officiating.

Interment will be held privately at Alto Reste Park.
