Richard E. "Dick" Donelson, 98, formerly of Altoona, died early Friday morning at Graystone Court, Huntingdon. He was born in Entriken, a son of the late George Roosevelt and Viola Grace (Brindle) Donelson.
He was twice married: first in 1947 to Harriet May Golden who preceded him in death Oct. 11, 2004, and then on May 17, 2007, to Nancy G. Greenwood, who preceded him in death Feb. 17, 2017.
Surviving are three grandchildren: Zachary R. Millward (Katherine) of York, Sarah E. Millward of Latrobe, and Nathaniel G. Millward (Tiffany) of Freedom; nine great-grandchildren: Mekenzie and Lincoln Millward, Kylie and Austin Blaszkowski, and Landon, Tanner, Kaden, Aliana and Owen Millward; a sister, Virginia Rudy of
McConnellstown; and his son-in-law, Patsy Dent of Latrobe.
Dick was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda E. Dent on May 12, 2020; and a sister, Eva Stone.
Mr. Donelson was a longtime member of Altoona First Church of the Brethren, where he served as treasurer for 63 years.
He was a graduate of Huntingdon High School, and then received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Rider College in Trenton, N.J., where he attended from 1946 to his 1949 graduation.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during WWII from 1943-46. He was stationed aboard the USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier in the Pacific theatre of war and was aboard the ship when it was attacked by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft.
Dick retired from Ward Trucking on Aug. 31, 1990, having been employed by that firm since Jan. 10, 1950.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2023, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona; and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, at Altoona First Church of the Brethren, 510 Fifth St., Altoona, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gary Koontz officiating.
Interment will be made at Alto-Reste Park where military honors will be accorded. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations please be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 200 Vesey St., 28th Floor, New York, NY 10281.
