Mary J. Modico, 99, of Altoona, went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, at her home. She was born in Ebensburg, the daughter of Felix Loria and Angelina (Giraulo) Loria.
A graduate of Central Cambria High School, she worked as a secretary and at the Sylvania Electronics Tubes plant before her marriage to Samuel J. Modico on Jan. 31, 1948, in Ebensburg.
They were happily married for 53 years and raised six children before his death on April 27, 2001.
Mrs. Modico was a member of Grace Fellowship Church, Leamersville Campus.
She was a Steelers fan and also loved the Altoona Curve, where she had been a season-ticket holder since 1999. Mary also loved spending summers at the beach and enjoyed playing cards, along with crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
Mary was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary P. Patterson (Robert).
She is survived by five children: Angela Fagan (Donal), Frank P. Modico (Renee), Sandra M. Garman (Terry, deceased), David J. Modico (Lisa) and Samuel J. Modico Jr. (Shelley), all of Altoona; 12 grandchildren: Tammy Dryburgh, Eric Hamel, Amy Zimmerman, Steven Snowberger (deceased), David Garman, Lori Landis, Mandy Kay, Melissa Modico, Jessica McConnell, Samuel J. Modico III, Mary Kate Modico and Joseph Modico; 21 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She led a long, loving life and will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings: Clara Kristofco, Sister Caroline Loria, Sanda Taylor, Alec Loria, Lucy Uncapher, Florence “Dolly” Heinrich and an infant brother.
Friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023, at Anthony P. Scaglione Funeral Home, 1908 Seventh Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. Pastor Mark Lingenfelter will give the eulogy. Entombment at Calvary Cemetery.
