John M. Pifko, 86, a resident of John Paul II Manor, formerly of Loretto, passed away peacefully Friday at the Manor.
He was born in Newell, W.Va., son of the late Michael and Agnes (Nakoneczny) Pifko.
Surviving are his loving wife, Mary E. (Madachy), whom he married May 27, 1972, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Huntington, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his two brothers; two sisters; and two nephews.
John graduated from Wells High School, Newell, W. Va. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After his time in the Navy, he went on to attend the College of Steubenville, Ohio, where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in education. After receiving his Bachelor's degree, he taught at several schools. He then moved from Ohio to Huntington, W. Va., for a teaching position at Sacred Heart Catholic School. He also attended Marshall University, where he received his Master's degree in education. After his retirement from being an educator, he and his wife moved to Loretto with their dear friend, Father Eugene Jacobs.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023, at Anderson Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 233 Keystone Ave., Cresson. He was a member of the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023, the Very Rev. Father John Byrnes, celebrant. Burial will be at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Loretto.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church or to John Paul II Manor.
