George M. Long, 84, of Bellwood, formerly of Rural Valley, passed away Sunday at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home. He was born in Braddock, a son of George and Grace (Holloway) Long.
George was a Special Forces Vietnam Combat veteran. He retired as a Major from the U.S. Army. He later owned his own management consulting firm. He held a Master of Behavioral Science in the field of psychology.
George was an Eagle Scout and involved in scouting in his youth. He was a member of the Rural Valley Lions, the American Legion, USA Hockey, the Retired Officers Association and the American Radio Relay League (HAM Oper. KD3LE). He enjoyed playing and coaching ice hockey and was a certified hockey referee. He earned a brown belt in taekwondo. He also enjoyed drawing and oil painting.
George is survived by his wife, Barbara (Nachylowski) Long, whom he wed Nov. 28, 1959; four sons: George (Gena) Long of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; Kevin (Tracy) Long of Altoona; Mark (Filomena) Long of Bellwood; and Andrew (Katherine) Long of Chicago, Ill.; two daughters, Dorothy (Timothy Seibert) Machado of Leechburg and Cynthia Curtis of Kittanning; and a brother, David E. Long of Canyon Lake, Texas; six grandsons; six granddaughters; four great-grandsons; and four great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert E. Long.
Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023, at Carson/Boyer Funeral Home Inc., Rural Valley. A blessing service will immediately follow at the funeral home.
Burial will take place in the St. Mary R.C. Cemetery, Yatesboro, with full Military Honors.
