July 18, 1945 – Oct. 1, 2023

Grassmyer

Melvin C. Grassmyer, 78, of Pinecroft, went peacefully with his Lord and Savior on Sunday afternoon surrounded by his family at UPMC Altoona after a brief illness. He was born in Pinecroft, a son of the late Clarence H. and Emily Jane (Stever) Grassmyer.

On Sept. 28, 1967, he married the love of his life, Barbara Pfahler, in Bellwood, spending 56 years loving each other.

He leaves behind his wife; a daughter, Paula (Jim) Imler; a son, Melvin C. II (Allison Kehoe); six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Russell and Jesse; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by siblings: Clarence, John, Paul, Samuel, Geraldine, Glenn and Charles.

In 1963, Melvin served his country as a private in the U.S. Army.

Throughout his life, he was employed as a factory worker, baker and butcher, amongst other jobs. He was a man of many trades, and in 2010, he retired from Small Tube Products Inc., Duncansville.

Melvin was an avid hunter and talented butcher. In 1981, he and his brother, Charles, established Grassmyer's Deer Processing, which is still in business today.

He was a lifetime member of Pinecroft Volunteer Fire Company and Pinecroft United Methodist Church, where he served as a board member and trustee.

Melvin was a selfless man, always putting others before himself. More than anything, he cherished spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he fiercely and whole- heartedly loved.

He was known for giving the best hugs, and when he gave you a hug, you knew he meant it.

Melvin will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023, at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home Inc., Bellwood.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Pinecroft United Methodist Church.
