Joseph E. "Joe" Stevens, 76, Loretto, died Sunday at his residence.
He was born in Gallitzin, son of the late Kenneth and Velma (Zerbee) Stevens.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, the former Harriet G. McConnell, whom he married June 15, 1968, at St. Patrick Church, Gallitzin; his children: Lenny, Larry and Jolene (Jesse) Moyer; grandchildren: Amanda, Cory, Avrianna, Mya, Allissa, Megan and Jada; siblings: Bill (Lynne), Rosemary Wilkinson, Norman (Judy) and Margaret Pinkard; a sister-in-law, Patricia Stevens; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by siblings: Ronald, James (Dottie), Nancy Eberhart and Debbie Milko; and a brother-in-law, Ron Wilkinson.
He was a 1964 graduate of Cresson High School and worked as a corrections officer at SCI Cresson before retiring in 2001. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Gallitzin American Legion, Sankertown VFW and the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Loretto.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at Gibbons Funeral Home, 301 Church St., Gallitzin, where a vigil service will be held Tuesday. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Loretto, the Rev. John Byrnes, celebrant.
Committal will be at St. Aloysius Cemetery, Cresson. Military rites will be provided by Gallitzin American Legion, Sankertown VFW and other local military organizations.
