Gary H. Rourke

April 8, 1937 – May 23, 2023

Gary H. Rourke, 86, of Chambersburg, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Magnolias of Chambersburg. He was born in Wood, Pa., a son of the late Albert L. and Margaret H. (Black) Rourke.

Gary was a 1956 graduate of Robertsdale High School, where he was vice-president of his graduating class. In 1954, Gary was the only underclassman to start every varsity game during the famed 1954 undefeated Tiger football season. The streak lasted 29 games, which covered three seasons of R.H.S Tiger football. In 1955, his senior year, he was elected captain of the Tiger football team.

After high school, Gary served in the United States Army from October 1956 until October 1959 as a SP4 (T) E4, receiving the good conduct medal.

He was a life member of VFW Post 1599 in Chambersburg and was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving are a sister, Laura Wright and her husband, Dick, of Chambersburg; brothers: Dennis “Butch” Rourke and his wife, Peggy, of Broad Top City, Pa.; Robert Rourke and his wife, Kay, of Massilan, Ohio; Homer Rourke and his wife, Doris, of James Creek, Pa.; Warren Rourke and his wife, Deb, of Saxton, Pa.; his companion, Helen Shumaker of Natrona Heights, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters: Orla, Gwen and Mary; and brothers: Delmar, Dean, William and Palmer.

Friends will be received from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, June 5, 2023, at Curtis A. Heath Funeral Home Inc., 5010 Railroad Ave., Broad Top City, Pa. A funeral service will immediately follow with Pastor Jeff Musser officiating.

Interment will take place in the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Broad Top City, Pa., with military honors provided by Broad Top Area Honor Guard.
