Carol Benzel-Banks, 80, of Port Crane, N.Y., formerly of Altoona, journeyed to the Heavenly world on May 11, 2023, from Mercy House in Endicott, N.Y. Her loving family was by her side as the journey began.
Carol graduated from Altoona High School, Class of 1960, and participated in marching band for three years.
She married Edward in 1964. They lived in Lock Haven and moved to Binghamton the following year.
Surviving are her husband of more than 58 years, Edward; a daughter, Michele, and her husband, David O'Toole, and their two sons, Zachary and Michael; a son, Matthew Banks; a nephew, Michael, and his wife, Sharon Benzel; and niece, Suzanne, and her husband, Scott Hardin, and their families; and cousins, Luann and Bob Seitz and Bonnie Keys.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Emma; stepfather, Carl Scheffer; father, Karl Benzel; brothers, Robert and Richard; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Carol worked as a teacher's aide in the preschool program of Chenango Forks School District. She thoroughly enjoyed working with young children, teaching and supporting staff. Highlights in her life were following the evolution of her grandchildren, Zachary and Michael, in schooling, baseball and most important, hockey time.
Our family extends the most grateful "Thank You" to Dr. Ronald Harris and his oncology staff at UHS; Dr. Michael Federico and the staff at Endwell Physician Services; and a very special "Thank You" to the staff and officers of Mercy House.
