Jack L. Hoffer, 77, Duncansville, died unexpectedly Wednesday at UPMC Altoona. He was born in Windber, son of the late Maurice and Mary Ellen (Lehman) Hoffer.
Surviving are six siblings: Joyce Wilt of Roaring Spring, Gloria Kelly (Lou) of Duncansville, Barbara Detrick (Don) of Duncansville, Carol Musselman of Claysburg, Terrance Hoffer of Coral Gables, Fla., and Melvin Hoffer of Duncansville; an aunt, Janet Yonker of Windber; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Hoffer.
Jack was a 1963 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School, a 1964 graduate of Franklin School of Science & Arts, and a 1973 graduate of Penn State, where he received a degree in Medical Laboratory Science. He worked in labs in Philadelphia, New York and Johnstown from 1973 until 2008.
He was ordained as a deacon in 2007 from Bucknell University. He served as a deacon at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Altoona from 2007 to 2010, and was the current deacon at Trinity Episcopal Church in Tyrone. Jack was also an instructor at Mount Aloysius College, teaching immunohematology and serology.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving from 1966 to 1970.
Jack was a selfless volunteer and gave his time, effort and support to numerous charities and organizations between Altoona and Tyrone. He wanted to be remembered as a faithful pilgrim.
Friends and family will be received from 4 until the 7 p.m. memorial service Monday, March 6, 2023, with Military Honors, at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., Duncansville.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2023, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Tyrone.
Interment will take place at Alto-Reste Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 830 Washington Ave., Tyrone, PA 16686; and/or Tyrone Food Bank, 1200 Logan Ave., Tyrone, PA 16686.
