Dr. John W. Griffith Jr., 87, Huntingdon, passed away at his residence Monday morning after a short-term illness. He was born in Altoona, son of the late John W. Sr. and Florence (Eckels) Griffith.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was preceded in death by his siblings: Edgar A., Marjorie A. and Ruby Griffith.
Dr. Griffith attended and graduated from the Altoona Area School District. Following graduation from high school, he served in the United States Army, stationed in Korea.
After being discharged from the service, Dr. Griffith continued his education at Penn State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. Dr. Griffith then attended the University of Pittsburgh, earning his master's degree and Ph.D.
Dr. Griffith was employed as an educator for various universities before returning to coordinate a learning center at the Smithfield Correctional Institution. He retired from the State Department of Education.
He was an avid traveler, living throughout the United States and in Asia, but Pennsylvania was always home.
Interment will be made at Rosehill Cemetery, where a graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2022.
