Mary E. Smith, 99, a resident at Homewood at Martinsburg, formerly of East Freedom, went home to be with the Lord on Monday surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Everett, daughter of the late Edward B. and Margaret P. (Bartholow) Lewis.
She married Reuben J. Smith on Feb. 21, 1941, in Maryland. He preceded her in death Aug. 5, 2017.
Surviving are three sons: Reuben C. Smith and his wife, Shirley, of East Freedom, Terry L. Smith and his wife, Joy, of Linesville, Pa., and Val D. Smith and his wife, Jackie, of East Freedom; a special niece, Janet Coates, and her husband, Richard, of Roaring Spring; seven grandchildren: Mike, Randy (Dana), Holly Keller (Paul), Ryan (Ashley), Joshua (Adrienne), Aaron (Allison) and Michaela Smith (Kadden); 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marion Brightbill and Patty Mountain, both of East Freedom.
She was preceded in death by three brothers: Leo, George and Robert; and four sisters: Kathryn, Edith, Joanne and Barbara.
Mary was a member of Foot of Ten Independent Baptist Church. Mary had her faith in God and lived by that faith as an example to others. At a young age, she attended a tent revival in Jugtown with Oliver B. Green as the evangelist. At that time, she went forward and asked God to forgive her of her sins and asked him into her heart to be her Lord and Savior. Because of that day, we have the assurance she is in Heaven with her God.
Mary had worked as a home health aide through Home Nursing. She loved flowers and gardening, quilting and crafting and baking cookies.
Friends will be received from 1 until the 3 p.m. funeral service Friday, Sept. 9, 2022, in the Bice Memorial Chapel at Homewood at Martinsburg, with Pastor David Huston and Pastor Gerald McCuller officiating. Interment will be made in Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Roaring Spring.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mary's memory may be given to the Blair County Christian School.
