Dr. Kathryn Anne (Huxtable) Lewis, 86, of Tyrone, died Dec. 7, 2020, completing her residency on Earth and receiving her eternal retirement in Heaven. Kathryn was born in Lakewood, Ohio, to Harold S. and Ottilie May Huxtable.
She was married on April 8, 1967, to the Rev. Dr. Samuel T. Lewis III, who preceded her in death.
Also preceding her in death were her brother, Richard Scott Huxtable; sister, Mary Frances Huxtable; and a family friend, Verneda Schwan.
She is survived by sons: Samuel T. "Todd" Lewis IV (Marcie) and Dr. Stephen A. B. Lewis (Jackie); a daughter, Anne E. M. Schuyler (Matthew); and 16 grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Martha H. Harris (Jim) and Anne H. Palomaki (Jack); and much-loved nieces and nephews.
Dr. Lewis was the valedictorian of Lakewood High School class of 1952 and a graduate of Cornell University. She received a master's in public health from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and a Doctorate from the Yale School of Medicine.
Her first year of residency was performed at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, where she studied under C. Everett Koop, former U.S. Surgeon General. Her later years of residency were completed at University Hospitals of Cleveland, where she served as chief resident in her final year.
From 1964-65, she participated with the Johns Hopkins Research Team to serve in public health and family planning studies in Lahore, Pakistan. The focus of that endeavor, funded by the Ford Foundation, was on maternal health, infant mortality, and the impact of nutrition for mothers and babies. Working in Pakistan, she developed a heart for international mission, which she shared with many churches and groups throughout her life. From 1965-67, she worked at the Cleveland Metro Pediatric Clinic completing her service as the director. From 1967-75, she taught ambulatory pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (now UPMC). From 1975 through her retirement in 2002, she worked at the Tyrone Hospital (now Penn Highlands Tyrone) as a much-loved pediatrician. Her medical practice was an extension of Christian ministry, and she brought many families and co-workers closer to God. She led an employee prayer group at Tyrone Hospital for many years. She retired as a Geisinger employee from the Tyrone Hospital Campus.
Following her retirement, she led two adult mission teams to Haiti. Kay was a youth leader and Sunday school teacher for 60 years, serving Presbyterian churches in Rocky River, Ohio; Delmont; Houston, Pa., Lower Spruce Creek and Sinking Valley near Tyrone.
From 1967-94, she wholly supported her husband, the Rev. Lewis,' ministry and was a gracious "pastor's wife." She had a passion for Christian education and was especially influential to elementary and middle school-aged children. Kay was ordained as a deacon and an elder. She enjoyed home visits and serving communion to the elderly. She also served on committees and groups in many churches and the Huntingdon Presbytery. She was a member of the Tyrone Kiwanis Club.
"Grammie" had a special role in the lives of her grandchildren, especially enjoying reading to them and visits to the park. She volunteered at numerous daycares and preschools reading Bible stories.
She was loved and cared for by many employees of Colonial Courtyard and Epworth Manor.
Services for Dr. Kathryn Anne (Huxtable) Lewis will be announced and offered to the public in 2021.
