Gerald L. ‘Gerry’ Cooper Jr.
March 31, 1953 – March 10, 2018

Gerald L. “Gerry” Cooper Jr., 64, Altoona, passed away on Saturday.
He was born in Hunting-don, son of Gerald L. Cooper Sr. and Pauline A. (Edwards) Cooper. He married Margaret E. Peightal on June 5, 1976.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Pam (Patrick) Stehley of Pittsburgh and Geri (Gregg) Defilippi of Freeport: a granddaughter, Eliza Stehley; and two sisters: Nancy (Galen) Hoffmaster of Petersburg and Bunnie (Tom) Frye of Etters.
Gerry was a 1971 graduate of Juniata Valley High School and a 1975 graduate of Shippensburg University. He retired from Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School as a math teacher, where he was best known as “Sir.” Among his accomplishments, he was named the first Teacher of the Year by the National Association of Catholic School Teachers and had been inducted into the Ring of Honor at Bishop Guilfoyle. He dedicated his life to his family, friends and Bishop Guilfoyle.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Altoona. Committal will be at Alexandria Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Gerry may be made to Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School Scholarship Fund.
