Carolyn W. Ward, 86, Hollidaysburg, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday at UPMC Altoona as a result of heart failure.
She was born in Frankford, Del., daughter of the late Preston and Mildred (Tingle) Williams. On June 19, 1953, she married G. William “Bill” Ward in Rehoboth Beach, Del.
Surviving is her husband with whom she shared 64 years of marriage and who will greatly miss her; and four sons: Timothy (Barbara) Ward of Monroeville, David (Elizabeth) Ward of Hollidaysburg, William (Judy) Ward of Hollidaysburg and Peter (Maria) Ward of Cranberry Township; and a daughter, Sarah (Jon) Arosell of Camp Hill. She was devoted and loving to 12 grandchildren: Sara Ward Medsger, Katie Ward, Lucie Ward, Jessica Farnan, Elizabeth Ward, David Ward Jr., James Ward, William T. Ward Jr., Adam Ward, Carolyn Arosell, Ella Ward and Laura Ward; and three great-grandchildren: Emily Farnan, Charles Farnan and Hildegard Medsger, all of whom will miss her dearly. She is also survived by a brother, Preston (Daisy) Williams of Millsboro, Del.
Carolyn was a 1949 graduate of Penn Hall Prep School, Chambersburg, and in 1953, she received a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Delaware.
She was a faithful Catholic and a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lakemont. Throughout her life, she was an active supporter of the arts in Blair County, including the Altoona Symphony League, Altoona Community Theatre and the Southern Allegheny Museum of Art.
Carolyn was tireless in her volunteer work, including 22 years at St. Vincent DePaul Society Soup Kitchen, as well as being a past member of the Altoona Public Library Board and a member of Friends of Altoona Area Public Library and Friends of Hollidaysburg Area Public Library.
She was unassuming and had a creative and classic sense of style. For many years, she was an area consultant for Carlisle Collection. She was a past den mother, a member of the Woman’s Club of Altoona, a recreational tennis player and avid reader, consuming two books a week.
She and Bill loved to travel and spent 20 activity-filled summers at the Chautauqua Institute in Chautauqua, N.Y. Later in life, Carolyn enjoyed watercolor painting and kept physically fit with weekly visits to the Hollidaysburg YMCA.
Her greatest joy was her family and she was devoted and nurturing to them above all else.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 25, 2017, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. There will be a private funeral service. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
