Helen A. McConnell

Helen A. McConnell, 97, Ebensburg RD, died Wednesday at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown.

She was born in Carrolltown, daughter of the late William D. and Adelaide (Farabaugh) Wetzel.

Surviving are nine children: Louis Jr. (Alwilda Beck) of Norway, Mich., Alice “Leah” Deter (Tom) of Baden, Jack of Ebensburg RD, Janet of Springfield, Va., Edward (Linda Krajewski) of Bellefonte, Jean O’Neill (Terry) of Ebensburg RD, Mark (Theresa Connacher) of Ebensburg RD, Deborah Kline (Fred) of Lilly and Annette Latoche (Bob) of Hollidaysburg; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, on Feb. 29, 2000; and by 10 siblings: Amanda, Anna Anna, John, Mary Shero, Edward, William Jr., Fred, David, Tom and Margaret Creighton. She was the last member of her immediate family.

Helen worked as a nurse’s aide at the Ebensburg Center for 14 years and retired in 1977. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees and an active member of the Loretto and Cresson Senior Citizens. She was also a member of Basilica of St. Michael, Loretto, a promoter of the Miraculous Medal, an associate member of the Legion of Mary and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.

Helen enjoyed bingo and going to the casinos.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 15, 2015, at Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville, where a vigil service will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, March 16, 2015, at the Basilica of St. Michael, Loretto, Monsignor Timothy Swope as celebrant. Committal will be in the church cemetery.
