Juniata United Methodist Church will offer a free, outdoor Stations of the Cross experience beginning March 27 and running through Easter Sunday, April 5. The self-guided prayer journey is open to everyone in the community, regardless of church affiliation or faith background.
Twelve stations installed around the church property guide visitors through the final hours of Jesus Christ’s life, from his trial and crucifixion to his burial. At each station, participants can scan a QR code with their smartphone to access a brief audio reflection (3 to 5 minutes) that explains what happened at that moment and its spiritual significance.
"The Stations of the Cross is an ancient Christian practice that helps people encounter the heart of the Christian faith -- God’s love demonstrated through Christ’s sacrifice," said Rev. Denise Haskins, pastor of Juniata UMC. "We’re excited to offer this not just for our congregation, but as a gift to our entire community. Whether someone has been following Jesus for decades or has never heard his story, these stations offer a beautiful, accessible way to engage with the gospel."
The outdoor format allows visitors to walk the stations at their own pace, alone or with family and friends. The complete experience takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes. No registration or prior knowledge is required.
The practice of walking the Stations of the Cross dates back to the early centuries of Christianity, when pilgrims would travel to Jerusalem to retrace Jesus’ final journey. When such pilgrimages became impossible for most believers, churches began creating representations of these stations so people could make this spiritual journey closer to home. Today, millions of Christians worldwide observe this practice during Holy Week, the period leading up to Easter.
Juniata UMC’s version differs from the traditional stations, focusing on specific biblical moments witnessed and recorded by the Gospel writers, including Jesus’ unjust condemnation, the soldiers’ mockery, Simon of Cyrene carrying the cross, Jesus’ care for his mother, the penitent thief’s prayer, Jesus’ final words and his burial.
"This is designed to be an invitation, not just an information experience," Rev. Haskins explained. "We hope it becomes a bridge for people who are spiritually curious but might never walk through our church doors. It’s a way for our community to encounter Jesus where he meets all of us -- in his suffering and in his love."
The stations are wheelchair accessible and will be available during daylight hours. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own smartphones to access the audio content, though printed materials will also be available.
