Food pantry, movie night planned
The food pantry at the Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren will be open Friday, Jan. 19. The pantry is for people living in Blair County.
Also, the church will host movie night beginning with snacks at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19. The movie "Owd Bob" begins at 7 p.m. and is a story about an orphan boy and his dog. All are welcome.
Night of worship set
Holy Spirit Ministry will host a night of worship at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at St. Michael Church, Hollidaysburg.
"Kingdom Gifts for Kingdom Builders" a four-part series exploring the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and the call to evangelization. Father David Dodd, T.O.R., will lead the talks.
Praise and worship will precede the talks and prayer ministry will follow each night.
Eucharistic adoration will be held each evening of this series.
Free lunch
Providence Presbyterian Church, 2401 Broad Ave., Altoona, will offer free lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20. Lunch will include hot dogs, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, a dessert and fruit. All are welcome.
Free clothing, lunch offered
A free clothing giveaway and free lunch will be offered from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 200 Third Ave., Altoona. All are welcome.
Novena set
The first novena of 2024 to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Therese (the Little Flower) offered by the Discalced Carmelite Nuns of Loretto will open on Monday, Jan. 22, and end on Tuesday, Jan. 30.
The public is welcome to attend benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament at 4 p.m. Sundays in the chapel.

Breakfast buffet benefits missions
A grand breakfast buffet will be held from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Raystown Brethren Church, 129 Winterberry Lane, Saxton. Take out is available. Cost is by donation.

Music service scheduled for kids
A Joyful Noise service is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, at Juniata United Methodist Church. This service is intended for children with autism, PDD-NOS, ADHD, Down's Syndrome and any other developmental/physical challenges and families with young children.
The joy-filled service will bring together children with and without disabilities and give them the opportunity to learn from one another about God's love for them -- all in an atmosphere of understanding and acceptance. The service will be lively with combinations of music, movement, prayer and Bible stories.

Food pantry planned
St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Eighth Avenue and 13th Street, Altoona, will hold its monthly food pantry distribution from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25.
Food distribution is done on a drive-thru basis to maximize social distancing, and the use of masks is encouraged for those on foot or getting out of their cars. Donations to the food pantry, either in money or in food are always welcome.
The food pantry distributions will be held each month and are tentatively scheduled for Feb. 29, March 21, April 25, May 23, June 27, July 25, Aug. 29, Sept. 26, Oct. 24, Nov. 21 and Dec. 19.
Hollidaysburg churches host soup program
The Free Soup Program of Hollidaysburg will be offered by five churches in Hollidaysburg through the winter months, from January to March. Each church will host the program on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. In case of bad weather, cancellations will be announced on Forever Broadcasting stations or the website of lightnercommunications.com.
St. John's Reformed Church, 906 Maple Ave., will host the meal Jan. 20 and Jan. 27. Hot soup, a sandwich, bread, butter, desserts and beverages will be served.
First Presbyterian Church, Penn and Walnut streets, Feb. 3, Feb. 10 and Feb. 17.
St. Mary Catholic Church, Mulberry and Clark streets, Feb. 24, March 2 and March 9
St. Michael Catholic Church, Montgomery and Spruce streets, March 16 and March 23
All churches will offer soup, bread and butter, desserts, tea, coffee and water.
St. Mary Catholic Church and St. John's Reformed Church will also serve a sandwich with the soup. There is no charge; offerings will be accepted.
This program is a mission of the churches in Hollidaysburg. It is not restricted to church members, but is open to everyone, including those in financial need and those in need of Christian fellowship.
Tax assistance offered
The New Life Tax Team is gearing up for its 14th tax season. The team will complete regular federal, state and local tax returns for a donation of at least $30 and business/rental returns for a donation of $50 or more.
The group has served more than 1,860 clients and has raised more than $80,000 for nonprofits.
This year, the mission will be supporting 18 nonprofits -- including organizations dealing with the homeless, youth, elderly and disabled. Funds will also go to support an orphanage in Kenya, a nursing program in Congo, and to provide firewood for people in need.
The tax team APP can be used by clients from near and far and can be downloaded at https://taxestogo.com/App/Download/ 3287. Last year, the group completed more than 100 returns for clients as far away as Australia.
Tax documents will be accepted at the New Life Worship Center, 600 Ritts Road, Altoona, beginning Saturday, Jan 27. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Those using the service will need to provide last year's tax return, all tax documents for 2023 -- W2s, 1099/1097s, receipts, mileage, expenses, losses, dividend income, etc. -- as well as birthdates of dependents and a voided check if you want any refund to be direct deposited.
