Lakemont menorah lighting brings community together

In the setting of Lakemont Park, Altoona witnessed a display of unity and tradition as the local Jewish community, along with diverse attendees, gathered to celebrate Hanukkah on Dec. 13, 2023. The event, marked by the ceremonial lighting of the menorah, was a change of pace from the rise of anti-Semitic incidents in the nation.
Rabbi Horowitz of Chabad of Altoona initiated the ceremony with heartfelt gratitude towards everyone involved in organizing the event. He seamlessly transitioned into the historical significance of Hanukkah, recounting the Jewish people's triumph and the rededication of the Sanctuary in Jerusalem. The rabbi explained the miracle of the menorah, which, with enough oil for only one night, miraculously burned for eight, symbolizing the enduring spirit of the Jewish faith.
Councilman Mitch Cooper, addressing the gathering, spoke against the surge in anti-Semitic hate crimes, which have risen by almost 400% since Oct. 7.
"In Altoona, we stand firmly against hate towards any race or religion," he said, emphasizing the city's commitment to inclusivity and respect. "Tonight, as we light the menorah, we are shining a light into the darkness, affirming our solidarity and shared values."
Joel Hollander followed with a prayer for Israel. Rabbi Horowitz then led a prayer and proceeded to light the menorah, a moment that symbolized not just a religious ritual but a collective aspiration for peace and harmony.
As the menorah's lights flickered in the winter night, the atmosphere turned festive with music and the sharing of traditional doughnuts. The event transcended perceived religious boundaries, bringing together people from various communities. It was a celebration of light as relationships were rekindled in the glow of the menorah.
A participant captured the essence of the evening, saying, "We did it. The essence of Hanukkah is when one lights a candle, it benefits all who's in the vicinity. Tonight, each person here, by bringing their light, has helped illuminate our community in their own way."
