Polo intensifies to hurricane
MIAMI -- Hurricane Polo will rapidly intensify in the Pacific Ocean and become a major hurricane later this week, forecasters said Monday.
Polo could bring heavy rain, rough surf and tropical-storm-force winds to parts of Mexico late Tuesday into early Wednesday, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

Appeals court favors Trump map
JEFFERSON CITY -- A long-running legal fight over Missouri's congressional map took another turn Monday when a federal appeals panel ruled in favor of new districts backed by President Donald Trump, even though the U.S. Supreme Court has blocked those districts from being used in the November election.
A three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Missouri should use the new Republican-drawn U.S. House districts in the November election, just as the state did in its primary.

Jury convicts man in shooting of 3
Burlington -- A jury on Monday convicted a Vermont man of attempted murder in the shootings of three Palestinian college students who were walking near his home, rejecting an insanity defense rooted in his claims that he was acting on orders from U.S. and Israeli intelligence agencies.
Jason Eaton faces up to life in prison in the November 2023 attack in Burlington, which paralyzed Hisham Awartani from the waist down and wounded his friends, Tahseen Aliahmad and Kinnan Abdalhamid.

Shots fired outside synagogue
BELLEVILLE -- A 29-year-old man armed with a shotgun opened fire on a police officer stationed outside an Ontario synagogue during Yom Kippur, triggering a shootout involving as many as 30 shots, the province's police watchdog said Monday.
The gunfire left the man with life-threatening injuries and seriously wounded a veteran of the Belleville Police Service, whose condition had stabilized as he recovered in intensive care.

BEIJING -- China has purged the country's highest-ranking army general and another top military official over alleged corruption and disloyalty uncovered during a monthslong investigation, state media said Monday.
The expulsions of Gen. Zhang Youxia, second only to President Xi Jinping in the military hierarchy, and Gen. Liu Zhenli, the chief of staff of the commission's Joint Staff Department, are seen as part of a crackdown on corruption.
