Tiananmen vigil organizers sentenced

HONG KONG -- Three Hong Kong activists who organized annual vigils in remembrance of China's 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown were sentenced Friday to about five to seven years in prison in a case that prompted criticism from abroad and is widely seen as a barometer of the city's eroding freedoms.

Lee Cheuk-yan, Chow Hang-tung and Albert Ho were convicted of inciting subversion earlier this year under a Beijing-imposed national security law.

Death toll in ferry fire rises to 35

CORON -- The fire that gutted a passenger ferry in the Philippines, killing at least 35 people, spread so fast that one man didn't have time to get a life jacket as others stepped on him in panic.

Fifty-four people are still missing since the fire tore through the ferry Wednesday night near southwestern Palawan province.
