Judge denies new trial
DALLAS -- A Texas judge denied a new trial for Karmelo Anthony on Saturday in the stabbing death of a 17-year-old athlete at a high school track meet, a killing that drew national attention and led to harassment of the families.
Anthony, 19, was convicted of murder in June and sentenced to 35 years in prison for the April 2025 killing of Austin Metcalf.

Wildfire threatens Reno
A fast-moving wildfire that jumped over fire trucks and made it difficult for crews to reach hot spots destroyed homes in northwest Reno, Nevada, on Sunday. Shifting winds challenged firefighters trying to bring it under control, and authorities urged some 90,000 people to evacuate.
At least six people -- three first responders and three civilians -- were injured, officials said. Officials said the fire was "human-caused" but did not provide details on how they reached that conclusion.

Storm kills 2 in Baltics
WARSAW -- Two people died and around half a million people were left without electricity across Latvia and Lithuania after a powerful cyclone, bringing rain and strong winds, hit the region on Saturday and into Sunday morning.
"This seems to be the most severe storm in Latvia since 2005 in terms of its overall impact," Andris Viksna, from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center, told the AP.

Landslide kills 30
TOKYO -- A moderate earthquake rattled eastern Japan, including the Tokyo area, early Sunday, injuring more than 30 people, most of them lightly, officials said. There was no danger of a tsunami.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 and its epicenter was in the southern Ibaraki prefecture with a depth of 42 miles.
