Bell wins Dem primary rematch
JEFFERSON CITY -- U.S. Rep. Wesley Bell won a rematch Tuesday in a Democratic primary against former U.S. Rep. Cori Bush, and Missouri voters rejected a ballot measure that could have made ii harder to pass citizen-led amendments in the future.
Bell's primary victory is likely to propel him to reelection in November in the heavily Democratic 1st Congressional District in St. Louis.

House investigates abuse allegations
The House Ethics Committee said Tuesday it had opened an investigation into domestic abuse allegations against Republican Rep. Max Miller as the embattled Ohio congressman faced pressure from President Donald Trump and escalating criticism from his former father-in-law, Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno.
Leaders of the ethics committee said in their statement that the committee was reviewing whether Miller "may have engaged in domestic violence and abuse or illegal drug use."

Man carrying ammo arrested at course
LOS ANGELES -- A man carrying ammunition and with a gun in his car was arrested Sunday at President Donald Trump's Los Angeles-area golf course after appearing to monitor security preparations two days ahead of Trump's fundraiser there, authorities said Tuesday.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Jeanine John Taele, 38, was taking photos and video and had a 16-round magazine with ammunition in his pocket.

Country on alert after volcano eruption
GUATEMALA CITY -- Guatemala remained on alert Tuesday after evacuating hundreds of people following an eruption of the Fuego volcano, which is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and one of Central America's most active volcanoes.
The country's disaster management agency said 659 people were evacuated from eight villages in the danger area and are being housed in nearby shelters.

Wildfires destroy 230 homes
VERNON, British Columbia -- A fast-moving wildfire destroyed about 230 homes in an Indigenous community in western Canada, officials said Tuesday, making it one of the country's most destructive fires in recent years.
Dan Wilson, chief of the Okanagan Indian Band, said the Bradley Creek wildfire devastated much of the reserve near Vernon, about 275 miles northeast of Vancouver.

Afghan child deaths on rise amid cuts
ROME -- Child malnutrition has reached critical levels in a third of Afghanistan's provinces and is expected to worsen as funding shortfalls force cuts in food distributions and other support, the U.N. World Food Program said Tuesday.
"We must act now to stem the rise in child deaths, which this crisis is provoking," John Aylieff, WFP's country director in Afghanistan, said in a statement, adding that "it is already too late for too many."
