Judge bars prediction market regulation

PHOENIX — A federal judge on Friday temporarily barred Arizona from enforcing its gambling laws against predictive market operators and put the brakes on a criminal wagering case that the state has filed against Kalshi.

U.S. District Judge Michael Liburdi’s ruling means a Monday arraignment hearing for Kalshi has been called off. State prosecutors allege Kalshi is running an illegal gambling operation.

Trump unveils ‘triumphal arch’

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s plans for a new triumphal arch in the capital, unveiled on Friday, include a towering winged figure with a Lady Liberty-like torch and crown, flanked by two eagles and guarded by four lions — all gilded.

The 12-page plan released by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts shows the arch will stand 250 feet tall from its base to the tip of the winged figure’s torch, with “One Nation Under God” and “Liberty and Justice for All” inscribed in gold atop either side of the monument.

Family sues US over child’s death

McALLEN — The Honduran family of an 8-year-old girl with a heart condition who died in U.S. custody after crossing the border in 2023 sued the federal government on Friday.

Anadith Danay Reyes Alvarez, who had chronic heart problems and sickle cell anemia, got sick with flu-like symptoms and died after being detained for eight days in a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility in Donna, then later Harlingen, Texas.

NKorea’s Kim strengthens China ties

SEOUL — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un voiced support for China’s push to build a “multipolar world” and called for deeper ties between the traditional allies during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, state media said Saturday.

During the meeting Friday, Kim said his government will fully support Chinese efforts to achieve territorial integrity based on its “one-China principle,” reference to Beijing’s official position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory.

Thousands attend event to oust Orban

BUDAPEST — Two days before Hungary’s closely watched elections, over 100,000 people filled a sprawling square and adjacent avenues in the capital for a concert featuring dozens of the country’s most popular performers — a call to action for citizens to vote out Prime Minister Viktor Orbán Sunday.

Over 50 bands, all performers who have used their music to express dissent against Orbán’s nationalist-populist government, played one song each during the seven-hour, “system-breaking” concert on Friday.

Court convicts 300 in terrorism trial

ABUJA — A court in the Nigerian capital of Abuja on Friday convicted more than 300 terrorism suspects in a mass trial that spanned four days.

The mass trial began Tuesday, with many suspects pleading guilty to charges brought against them by the Nigerian government and then sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.
