United raises bag fees
Most travelers flying with United Airlines will pay $10 more to check their luggage beginning on Friday, as higher jet fuel costs driven by the war in the Middle East push another major U.S. carrier to increase fees.
The first piece of checked luggage will now cost customers $45 on flights within the United States, Mexico, Canada and Latin America, according to United. A second bag will cost $55.

Fire forces evacuation
RIVERSIDE — A smoky and fast-growing wildfire Friday in windy Southern California has prompted multiple evacuation orders and warnings.
The Springs Fire broke out at about 11 a.m. Friday and by 3:30 p.m. had grown to 4.45 square miles. The cause of the fire east of Moreno Valley in Riverside County is under investigation. It was not immediately known how many households are under evacuation warnings or orders.

Earthquake kills 8
KABUL — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 rattled parts of northern and eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan late Friday, killing at least eight people in Afghanistan, authorities said.
The region is highly seismically active, and quakes have caused thousands of deaths in recent years.

Drone strike kills 10
CAIRO — Sudan’s paramilitary forces killed at least 10 people on Thursday in a drone attack that hit a hospital in the south-central part of the country, said a medical group.
Doctors Without Borders, also known as MSF, said the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces launched two drone strikes on al-Jabalain Hospital in the White Nile province, hitting an operating theater and a maternity ward.
