César Chavez Day events altered

Daily Briefing - Nation

Allegations that César Chavez sexually abused women and girls are reshaping how many communities honor him. The United Farm Workers says it will not join any event named for its late leader.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says state agencies won’t celebrate César Chavez Day. Cities including Milwaukee and Lansing, Michigan, are canceling dinners or other celebrations commemorating the labor leader.

Others are pushing to rename streets, schools and landmarks after civil rights leader and farmworker advocate Dolores Huerta instead.

Nebraska wildfire fight drags into day 7

Lawmakers struggle to make headway

WASHINGTON — Lawmakers appear far from ending a funding lapse at the Department of Homeland Security.

President Donald Trump’s nominee to run the department, Sen. Markwayne Mullin, has pleaded with colleagues to resolve the impasse. But there was little sign of a breakthrough.

House Democrats are instead launching a long shot effort to fund certain agencies except those focused on immigration enforcement. The shutdown of Homeland Security has lasted 33 days.

Starting at $2.99/week.
