The Tyrone Borough Council approved its 2026 Pennsylvania Community Development Block Grant application during Monday's meeting.

According to grant coordinator Trina Illig, the borough will receive $109,555 for federal year 2026.

Last month, the borough decided to allocate $89,840 for the existing Lincoln Avenue improvements project, while $19,715 will go to Blair County for its administration of the funding, Illig said.

The council also approved the implementation of an advanced communication device system as part of the borough's ongoing water meter upgrade project at a one-time cost of $95,698, which includes an annual hosting fee price of about $21,300.

The system will extend the borough's operational and administrative capabilities, officials said during the meeting.

Due to the accelerated installation progress made by the water department, the borough is positioned to implement the capability ahead of the original 2027 target, Borough Manager Kim Gurekovich said in her report.

Once operational, the system will enable office staff to perform several functions remotely, including meter reading, final billing reads and generating data logging and usage reports to improve billing accuracy and customer service response.

Gurekovich noted the borough's Halloween parade will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. Trick or treat will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, and a trunk or treat event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at Reservoir Park, Gurekovich said.

In his consultant report, John McGill of Local Growth Labs said the borough's comprehensive plan has made substantial progress over the last month.

The borough's community survey has received 600 responses, which represents slightly over 11% of Tyrone's population, according to McGill.

McGill said the borough will hold its third and final workshop for the comprehensive plan from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at St. Matthew Catholic Church along Cameron Avenue.

The public survey will remain available through the end of the month at the borough office and online at http://tyrone.lglabs.org.
