MARTINSBURG -- A longtime Morrisons Cove family business is being sold.

Rhodes Meat Market, founded in 1938 by Glenn and Mabel Rhodes, is being sold to Premium Fresh Market LLC, according to the Rhodes Facebook page.

"We are excited to announce that we have a prospective buyer, Premium Fresh Meat Market, LLC. They are set to become the new owner in early November. Their plan is to continue what we have started and expand with new items as well," the Facebook post reads. "Premium Fresh Meat Market, LLC will plan to open back up as soon as possible. There will be an update as soon as there is an exact date. We will be working closely with them to help with the transition of the business as they learn all of our recipes."

Current manager Christine Violet -- daughter of Lloyd and Kathryn Rhodes -- who has been running the business since 2003 with help from her sisters Laura and Ruth and son Brandon, said the new buyer is a businessman from the Poconos, but did not wish to reveal his identity at the time.

She said the business had been on the market for about two years.

"We are getting older and none of the younger generation wanted to take it over, so it was time to sell at this point," Violet said. "It took us a while, it took some time to find someone with the wherewithal to make it happen."

The last day of business as Rhodes Meat Market will be Oct. 31.

"We will continue serving our wonderful customers with a full line of all of our products through this upcoming month. Please bear with us as we do our best to keep up with demand. If you'd like any special orders, please feel free to call ahead. Also, please use up any remaining balances on any gift certificates at this time as well," the post states.

The business began in 1938, when Glenn and Mabel Rhodes began Rhodes Meat Market by loading up a truck and heading over the mountain to start selling meat by going door to door. That continued on and they bought the current location at 2983 Cove Mountain Road in 1946. Lloyd and Kathryn Rhodes purchased the business in 1972. Lloyd continued the path his parents had started until he passed away in 1990. Currently, the business has been operated by the Rhodes girls, along with a great-grandson, adding in the fourth generation.
