A 54-year-old Altoona man allegedly shot his wife, injuring her critically, then shot himself Monday morning in an attempted murder-suicide, according to a city police Facebook post.

Emir Manals of the 2100 block of 19th Street died from a single gunshot wound to the head, according to Blair County coroner Roy Benton.

His wife, whose name was not reported by police, is in critical condition in Pittsburgh, according to the Facebook post.

According to police, the wife called her father about 7:30 a.m., asking him "to come over and help with her husband and an 'episode,'" the Facebook post states.

The father came to the house, got no answer at the door and went back home to retrieve a key, according to the post.

On the way back to the 19th Street house, the father called police and advised them of what was happening, alerting them to the "mental health issues and that there were weapons and a dog inside," the post states.

He met with police outside the house, after which police "opened the door and got no answer," the post states.

"Using caution, they deployed a drone inside," the post states. "In a bedroom, a body was observed motionless on a bed."

Police entered the house and found the man and a deceased dog next to a woman, who was still breathing, according to the post.

Police called AMED, which rushed the woman to UPMC Altoona, after which she was taken to Pittsburgh, according to the post.

An autopsy for Manals is set for this morning at Mount Nittany Medical Center.
