TYRONE -- Three members of the Tyrone Area School Board received recognition from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association during Tuesday night's meeting, which also involved the introduction of a new junior class student representative.
Ivani Torres, PSBA's director of outreach, recognized board member Brian Bressler with a plaque for his 30 years of school board service, while board members Kris Laird and Gunter Volders each received a certificate in recognition of completing five years of service.
Through PSBA's honor roll of school board service program, officials recognize school directors who've reached important service milestones, beginning at five years of service and continuing at five-year intervals throughout their board tenure, Torres said, adding it's both an honor and a significant responsibility to serve on a school board.
"The individuals we recognize tonight have demonstrated exceptional dedication through their years of service," she said. "Their leadership, time and commitment have helped shape educational experiences for students, supported educators and staff and have strengthened their school community."
Student representative
In other business, high school Principal Darrin Ricciotti introduced Aiden Luther, the new junior class student representative, to the board.
Luther is involved in the National Honor Society as well as the school's swim team and ski club, Ricciotti said.
Luther and senior class student representative Brielle Parker, who's returning to the board after sitting in Luther's seat last year, both represent "everything we strive for here at Tyrone," Ricciotti said, noting school officials offer the role to students who have good grades, are involved in clubs and activities and interact well with the rest of the student body.
Luther said he hopes to learn more about how the school board is able to work together and decipher ideas because he wants to work somewhere that requires a lot of teamwork someday.
Luther said he loves being part of the National Honor Society and getting out in the community to help others.
"I feel like there's a lot of good that you can do in the community, and most people just need to go out and do it," Luther said. "I love this school, and I love the board already. I'm just glad to be part of this."
Board Vice President William Lash asked Parker whether she's enjoying her senior year, to which she said she is.
Parker said she's excited to enjoy her last year of high school and hopes to be accepted into a Philadelphia-area college soon, so she can continue her education, with the hopes of eventually going into medical school.
Parker said she's glad to be back, both in the classroom and at the school board meetings.
"I was really grateful to be able to be with these people because they work so hard for our school and what goes on for it," Parker said. "I was really grateful to be invited back for this opportunity."
The school district has had student representatives to the board since the 2012-13 school year, Superintendent Leslie Estep said.
