Saint Francis University will hold its Suicide Prevention Walk from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, on the campus mall.

The event aims to raise awareness of suicide prevention, challenge the stigma surrounding mental health and remind those who are struggling that they are not alone.

First held at Saint Francis University in 2017, the walk recognizes the profound impact suicide can have on individuals, families and communities. The event will offer a public expression of support and connect participants with resources and information about mental health and suicide prevention.

More than 15 resource providers and organizations are expected to participate, including private practices, inpatient and outpatient services, advocacy groups, nonprofit organizations and campus organizations. Participating Saint Francis University groups will include the Social Work Club, athletic teams, fraternities and sororities.

Organizations will provide information about mental health services, suicide prevention efforts and other support available throughout the region. The event also will encourage open and compassionate conversations about mental health and suicide prevention.

The walk will include an opportunity for remembrance. Attendees may dedicate memorial bags in honor of loved ones who have died by suicide. At 7 p.m., Campus Ministry will conclude the evening with a prayer for those who have died, those who continue to struggle and the families and friends affected by suicide.

Members of the campus and broader community are encouraged to participate and wear purple in recognition of suicide prevention awareness.

Anyone experiencing emotional distress or concerned about a loved one may call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 for free, confidential support 24 hours a day.
