ROARING SPRING -- The Spring Cove School Board is currently looking for a new member after Kevin Smith resigned due to ongoing issues with someone else on the board.
At Monday's meeting, the board voted 7 to 1 to approve member Smith's resignation, with all members voting in favor except Misti Fisher.
Smith and his wife, Lisa, sat in the back of the board room during the meeting, but did not speak.
During last week's committee meeting, Fisher told the board that she intended to vote no at the voting meeting, saying that "the community voted him in, and I believe he wants to be here."
Solicitor Jennifer Dambeck said after Monday's roll call vote that the board will advertise an open seat, seek applicants and fill the vacancy at the voting meeting scheduled for Oct. 19.
"All candidates, interviews and deliberation will happen out in the public session," she said. "It's not an appropriate executive session discussion."
Each candidate who applies will receive the same amount of questions, she said, with each candidate typically receiving a three- to five-minute public interview with the board.
"Just like any kind of interview process to make it fair," she said.
The board has 30 days to fill the vacancy, she said. Otherwise, a minimum of 10 district resident taxpayers can file a petition with the Court of Common Pleas for the court to appoint a new member instead.
In the event of a tie, Board President Amy Acker-Knisely said the board will continue to vote until they choose a candidate.
After the meeting, she said the board is looking for a well-rounded candidate.
"Someone who cares about education," she said.
Candidates are only required to live in the district, acting Superintendent Steven Foor said. The last time the Spring Cove School Board filled a vacant seat was in 2022 after former member James Butler resigned.
Applications will be available on the district website and at the business office by the end of the week. They're due to the board on Oct. 12.
