Mosquito control spraying planned for parts of Blair County

The Blair County Mosquito-borne Disease Control Program will conduct a truck-mounted ultra-low-volume mosquito control operation today, Thursday, Sept. 10, in portions of Antis Township, Blair Township and Hollidaysburg Borough.
The operation will begin around dusk and is intended to reduce populations of nuisance mosquitoes and mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile virus.
The adult mosquito control operation originally scheduled for Sept. 3 was canceled because of weather. A makeup operation scheduled for Sept. 8 was canceled because of equipment malfunctions.
The treatment will include portions of Antis Township, Blair Township and Hollidaysburg Borough. Other areas nearby also may be treated. The county said high populations of nuisance mosquitoes have been found in the area.
Weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances could delay or cancel the operation. If Thursday's operation is canceled, it will be rescheduled for Friday, Sept. 11.
Residents are asked to remain indoors while the truck-mounted spraying is conducted in their neighborhoods. County staff will turn off the sprayer as a courtesy when residents are outside during spraying. Officials said frequent interruptions can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
The primary product being used is Biomist 3+15 ULV, applied at a rate of 0.75 ounce per acre. The product will be applied using a white Ford F-350, unit BU1560.

Alternate equipment will be available in case of another equipment malfunction. The alternate product, AquaDuet, will be applied at a rate of 0.67 ounce per acre using a white Ford F-150, unit BU5976.
