Enhanced first aid station established at Jaffa Shrine

Community partnership works to create facility

A first aid station has been established at the Jaffa Shrine to enhance the safety and well-being of guests attending events at the local landmark. The project was completed through a partnership between the Jaffa Shrine, UPMC Altoona and the UPMC Altoona Foundation.

"Caring for our community doesn't begin when someone walks through our hospital doors, and it doesn't end when they leave," said Mike Corso, president of UPMC Altoona and UPMC Bedford. "We have a responsibility to support the health and well-being of our neighbors wherever they live, work and gather. This project reflects who we are at UPMC and our commitment to caring for the communities we serve, both inside and beyond our walls."

The first aid station provides a dedicated space for the assessment and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, helping ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for guests of all ages, staff, volunteers and event participants.

The space is equipped with a hospital bed, automated external defibrillator (AED), Stop the Bleed kit, medical supplies, a lactation chair and other essential items to support the large crowds who attend events at the Jaffa Shrine throughout the year.

The project was made possible through a donation from the UPMC Altoona Foundation and collaboration among community and healthcare leaders. Dr. Anthony Fidacaro, an emergency medicine physician at UPMC Altoona, played a key role in helping determine the equipment and supplies needed to ensure the space is prepared to address a variety of health-related scenarios.

"The Jaffa Shrine welcomes thousands of guests each year for community events, family activities and special programs," said Eric Ramsey, potentate of the Jaffa Shrine. "Having a dedicated first aid station provides an added level of comfort and reassurance for our visitors that basic medical assistance is readily available when needed. We are grateful for the partnership with UPMC Altoona, its Foundation and Dr. Fidacaro for helping create a resource that will benefit everyone who comes through our doors."
