WILLIAMSBURG -- The Williamsburg Community School Board unanimously adopted a new artificial intelligence policy Thursday evening.
According to policy 815.1, the board of school directors permits students and staff district-wide to use generative AI for approved educational purposes to support a dynamic learning experience.
Teachers will determine specific grades and expectations when students use AI in their classrooms, Superintendent Lisa Murgas said after the meeting.
"We're not writing specific programs into the policy," she said. "It's changing so much. It would be impossible to keep up with policy changes."
She said staff will receive formal AI training through the Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 and relay that information to students.
Adding an AI policy to the district handbook was a recommendation from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, she said, as the technology has become more prevalent in classrooms.
"Teachers are also looking for a little bit of guidance on policy for how AI can be used within classrooms," she said.
The new policy only allows students to use AI as a resource but not as the final product, she said.
